We’ve been doing this for a long time now at Rowville Community Kitchen and one thing that always hits us hard is the shame people feel when asking for food assistance.
Parents feel inadequate if they can’t afford to feed their families and a lot of that stems from the conversations we tend to have about food assistance.
If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that silence is the enemy.
Sadly, you’d be surprised at how many people you may know who need food assistance on a regular basis or even just from time-to-time.
Brace yourself for this alarming stat from www.foodbank.org.au:
Each year, 2 million people rely on food relief – around half of them are children.
And before you skim over that statistic, yes, we’re talking about Australia here. In other words, that’s 1 in every 10 Australians in need.
The more you look into this situation, the worse it becomes with recent Foodbank Australia statistics indicating that 67 per cent of Australian teachers are seeing children coming to school hungry.
That’s a sad situation, especially when you take into account that Aussies not doing it tough will eventually discard up to 20% of the food they purchase – that’s 1 out of every 5 bags of groceries.
We know: that’s a lot of wasted food and that’s why we’re passionate about rescuing food here at Rowville Community Kitchen.
We’re all about treating food as it should be and we’re proud of the community lunches that we provide for 48 weeks of the year. Our rescued food is used to serve guests with 2 courses that are both warm and healthy.
These lunches act as real highlights for the entire team: we love meeting and greeting everyone and enjoying a delicious meal together.
If you are struggling to make ends meet, we’d love to see you at our next lunch.
Meanwhile, if you’re reading this and would be interested in donating or sponsoring our fantastic cause, we’d love to hear from you (we’re internationally recognised!).
